I have lost count of how many times I have visited this really iconic location. I don't normally invest heavily in really well photographed scenes, but this one for me, is a big exception. I have been here in all seasons but this visit was really different and was a stark contrast to what I knew this scene to look like, from visits and other photographs. We had been further west in South Australia and on this visit to the homestead, were traveling home. I will never forget driving here on this day, from the west. We witnessed this vivid green carpet of new wheat all around us, it was amazing and for some time, seemed endless.
As we sailed past this scene in the car, we knew that a change in the weather was coming, so I was in a rush to drop off our camper trailer so we could make sure we had a sight for the night and get back here as soon as I could. First things first, we had to get permission from the land owner to get onto their property, I luckily still had their phone number from a previous trip. We booked in for the night, dumped our home on wheels, turned the car around and started calling, the phone disappointingly rang out. I would never enter a property to take photographs without permission and thought that on this occasion, I had missed out, we were gutted. Not a minute later our mobile rings, it is the property owner ringing back, more than happy for me to venture onto the property. It was on. That is when things clicked into place and we spied a small gap in the clouds moving towards the sun, the light was coming. We arrived, parked the car, I grabbed my gear and took this in, the sun was about to burst light onto this scene. I jumped the fence, ran into the field, set up, composed, moved, composed again, and fired off three photographs. During those few moments, as I clicked away, the sun and the break in the clouds met each other and the scene just came to life, it was like turning on a light switch. Roughly twenty seconds later the sun and the light was gone. The scene switched off in front of me. I just stood back and shook my head, I can't believe how that unfolded, but we got the shot. As I packed up, and I took some time to do this, it started to rain and didn't stop for the next three days. It was seemingly meant to be. I will never forget this experience. |
